Many moons ago I embarked on a tortuous journey through the turbulent seas of the ‘choose and book’ quest. It started innocently enough when a friendly being, the GP, laid out the requirements to complete my task. I had at my disposal a trusty computer and a telephone to aid me in my pursuit of treatment, even so I was very nearly thwarted on many occasions. The denizens of the Appointment lines placed many obstacles in my path, but I outwitted their bureaucratic maze and finally achieved my destiny. Today I set out on my final task, to be released from the gaze of a poorly organised, modern day barber’s shop. After 90 minutes of expectation I was summoned into the sanctum, and 10 minutes later I was officially a free woman and with my task completed I bade farewell to my sawbones and stepped out into the bleak midwinter.

Finally! After weeks of trying to book that appointment. How did it go?
Question no 1: was the result worth the pilgramage (choose and book always seems to resemble going up stairs on your knees to me)?
Question no 2: if we as experienced persons in the whole healthcare field struggle – how on earth does Joe public manage? And as for anyone without a landline – won’t even go there!
Kristina – I had my op back in July, yesterday was just the follow-up. I have been pronounced ‘completed’ so, after 18 months in total, I am happy with how things are!
Eileen – Yes, the quest was worth it, a few years of active life have been bestowed upon me.
Question 2 is more difficult. I sometimes think that, as healthcare professionals, we may be rather more laid back about chasing things as we appreciate the weird machinations of the NHS so if I were Joe Public then I would have leapt on them faster. Certainly yesterday, during my hour and half wait, I witnessed several people barrack staff and get seen quicker than me. I sat quietly as I had overheard staff discussing an emergency which had called 2 of the medics away so I knew that they were chasing their tails.
This may be a time when ignorance is bliss. The less you know, the less slack you allow them.
