Team meeting this morning, and it was all going so well, then our team leader asked us if we had studied our payslips lately. At the moment they are really complicated as we should have a pay rise back in April, but they didn’t give it to us then so there are all different rates as the back pay starts to show up. She went on to say that she had contacted wages and salaries as there seemed to be an anomaly concerning weekend rates, and they confirmed what she had deduced, we are paid at a lower grade for weekend work! Expletives resounded, I am seething, incredulous and I really, really want to thump someone very, very hard. I am so agitated by this ridiculous anomaly that my New Year’s resolution of maintaining sang froid has flown, at supersonic speed, out of the window. I cannot envision any other profession, workers accepting this state of affairs. What it boils down to is that I am contracted to work, on a set hourly rate, a certain number of hours per week but that when I am rostered to work weekends I am paid at a lower hourly rate, I have yet to find out whether this also applies to Bank Holidays. Yes, I do get paid time and a quarter for Saturdays, and time and a third for Sundays but this ‘unsocial’ allowance is based on the lower payscale, what a wonderful deception. Perhaps I’m missing something here, some vital information has not been communicated to me or I am just being unreasonable.
I am so fed-up with with being treated like this. It started with our pay award not being given to us until November. This happened with the Police and look at the outcry about that. NHS employees, barely a whimper. Gordon Brown, you can shove your New Year’s message to us workers where the sun don’t shine. You want to pay tribute to us do you? I can understand that, I mean how wonderful it must be to be able to shaft such willing victims. As for ‘looking for ways to empower us’, that’s a laugh, it’s not power I want, just an HONEST days pay, that will do me just fine, Mr Brown.
