This old house

Still musing on how to compose my letter to the neighbour about our shared drains I came across this valuable piece of information which has completely altered my perspective on the drain/tree issue. So, if your house was built before 1937 the water board are responsible for your sewers. Result! Our house was built in 1922.

  1. What if we live in America? :)

  2. Lisa – Sorry, I was only searching ‘UK’ on Google, I don’t know if anywhere else has as odd laws as we do!

  3. Yes, you are right about the 1937 date. We had a cracked manhole cover in our back garden. When I rang United Utilities about it, they questioned me on when the house was built and whether it was a shared drain. We are pre 1937 and next doors waste comes down that sewer (don’t know what difference it would have made if not shared). The result? They came and replaced cover but also rebuilt the sides of the manhole as it had degraded. May well be worth ringing your water suppliers.

  4. Jessio – Many thanks for that. As our drains are shared we should have the same result, only problem might be next-doors tree as that is causing the problems.

  5. Hmm, I think you need to get a crazed man with a chainsaw and let him loose on said tree in the dead of night;-) Don’t think that approach would endear you to the neighbours though.
Before you compose your letter to them, it might be worth checking it hasn’t got a Tree Preservation Order on it, as that’d prolong the issue and could prove costly. If they are a bit arsey, they could request the council pop a TPO on themselves.

  6. Jessio – Unfortunately the tree is HUGE, otherwise I would have been a crazed woman with a chainsaw!
