Presumably it was cheaper this way than defending it in court. On the face of it, it's bizarre that anyone would think there was a case to answer despite the tragic circumstances. In fact, I left a comment to the effect of: Shame on you! This woman claimed that she wasn't doing it for the money, but instead, she wanted to make sure that this never happened to any one else. I say "pull the other one!". Like you, I'm hoping that there are things left out of the story because it seems absurd that the judge awarded her the win. The increasing lack of responsibility that people are prepared to take for themselves and the eagerness to sue for almost any reason makes me wonder where we're going with life at present.
